I noticed the following. For Forward Lookups, if I enter in a record manually- by editing the text file, saving, stopping and starting the service the record doesn't show up in the GUI. The OS thinks it is present [if i try to readd it-the GUI knows it's present]. If I enter the record in the GUI, it adds it to the text file identically to the way I am entering it.
