Hillary,

        Actually sendmail and qmail are just Message Transfer Agents, (MTA),
forwarders, they don't really store the mail.  As I'm sure you know SMTP is
just text, it's the stinking attachments etc that aren't.  When you hand off
messages to a Mail User Agent ,MUA, from Pine to Exchange that it gets
stored.  Pine is still text, you can just use grep to read mail.  ;')
