While it's pretty easy to move roles around and end up "upgrading hardware"
I wouldn't do that.

Depending on your network size get 2 or more real servers, even if they
don't have a lot of horsepower, they should have hardware RAID, redundant
power supplies etc.  

There's a saying,

        Good, Fast, Cheap, Pick any two.
