No, I installed RIS on a different server (non sp2).

Did you call them for the fix as it states?

Article number Q243500. It talks about the install hanging up at the
same
point it is hanging up on me and one of the possible problems is a SP2
server. I installed ris on another server just to eliminate that
possibility.

Also, could you post that article number about not having the server at
SP2.
All of ours are at SP2 and we haven't had a problem. I even copy images
from
.NET servers to Win2K servers and all work fine.

Yes, I am using Riprep, and yes the original Win2k image is still out
there.
In fact I tried to use the original CD instead of the Riprep image to
see if
maybe the problem was with the image. I have not modified the .sif
file,
and the image is in a separate folder.

Thanks,
Ryan

Reading back on you original post, you say "I want to use RIS as the
identical setup needs to go on quite a few machines." So I take it your
building an image first and then using the RIPrep.exe util to copy it
back
up to the server? You're not removing the original copy of the CD are
you?
You're putting the image into it's own folder and leaving there? Are you
modifying the .sif file in any way?

Yes, tried this it returns a message that everything is working
properly. I
also checked the event log and there is nothing there except messages
stating that the RIS server successfully created the computer account
for
the target machine.

Yesterday afternoon I re-booted the server and once it was back up I was
able to image 2 machines, then the problem started all over again. I
have
since tried re-booting the server but it does not help.

I found another article in technet about the lock-up problem but its
resolution was to keep the machine connected to the network until setup
has
finished. Both the client and the server are plugged into the same
switch
so I do not believe network connectivity is an issue.

Anyone have any other ideas??

If you look at your server properties in AD Users and Computers, under
the
Remote Install tab, did you click on the Verify server button to see if
it's
functioning properly? Are there any BINL errors in the Event Viewer?

Subject: RIS

I have recently setup a RIS server on our network. The first couple of
days
everything was working great. I was able to create images, download the
images to other machines, ect. After a few days the machines that I was
putting the image on would get to the "starting windows 2000" screen in
text
mode but will not go any further. Exact same hardware, bios rev, ect.
After
fighting with it for a wile I tried to re-image a machine that I had
successfully imaged previously and it was now locking up in the same
place.
After looking at some info on Microsoft's site they recommended not
running
it on a service pack 2 server. So, I moved the "ris server" to a
different
machine (fresh install of Windows 2000 server no SP), re-created the
images
on the server thinking this would resolve the problem. Nope, same
issue, I
can no longer "install" the images to any machine. I have not been able
to
find any more info on Microsoft's site. I have tried disabling and
removing
all non-essential hardware, updating the BIOS on the target machine, all
with no avail. I can successfully load 2000 on the target machine using
the
CD, but I want to use RIS as the identical setup needs to go on quite a
few
machines.

Anyone run into anything like this? Any ideas?
