There are obviously a lot of unknown variables that we'd have to know about
to properly help you with this problem.

Proxy/ISA?
What is the network architecture?
Pure NT? Pure 2000?
DNS, WINS or Both?
DHCP? How's it configured?
Can other O/S properly connect to the Internet?

Stupid question probably and I am not sure if this is even the right list
to ask.. On our NT2000 network i have a 98 machine that keeps getting an
error message on opening explorer

"Internet Explorer could not open the search page"

i have checked the internet setting and all seems fine, what else could be
giving this error?
