Also, use QCHAIN with multiple OS hotfixes if not rebooting between each
one. (OS hotfixes only - QCHAIN does squat for other hotfixes like IE and
Office fixes.)

Did you upgrade to the newest version of Internet Explorer, or at least IE
5.5 SP2?

IE 5.5 SP2 was supposed to close the hole that nimda exploits when you go to
an infected site.

If he got nailed with NIMDA, then McAfee wasn't running or up-to-date, as
you stated. If it was running correctly, and all the options were set
right, then it shouldn't have nailed him.

It's not the order of your installations, but the functionality and possibly
the settings of McAfee. And maybe the choices made during the use of the
III lockdown tool.

One thing though, after installing any software, the last thing you should
do is re-apply your service packs and hotfixes.

Mornin'

So I set up a laptop (win2k) for a user here, and he needed IIS on it (to do
demos for clients). Here's the order I followed:

1- Clean install of OS
2- Added/Removed Windows components and services as needed (ie, add IIS,
remove FTP, etc)
3- Ran SP2
4- Ran MS's IIS lockdown tool
5- Ran Pre-SP3 patches and hotfixes (Q285851, Q287397, Q301625 IIS Rollup)
6- Installed McAffee and got the latest engine and dats
7- Installed a coffee.

This particular user dialed up to his ISP and got nailed with nimdA and I'm
fraught with feelings of guilt. Did I get the order wrong?

Thx
