Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and thoughts.  To answer some of
them:

No, there is no conflict of IP addresses or MAC addresses.  I haven't found
anything in the event logs, either.  The problem occurs without warning,
except for the "Computer offline" icon appearing in the system tray, or, if
you miss that, the sudden inability to access one's user files.

I'll look into duplicate SID's, but if that were the case, wouldn't the
workstations fail to connect to the network at all?

Anyway, I've been dealing with the problem by taking a DC that has Ghost
installed off the network (it doesn't do anything else besides act as a DC),
plugging it into its own 100 Mbit hub, along with the machine to be ghosted,
and the image transfer occurs faster than over the production network.  :-)
OS, Office2K, company-specific software all transfer over in ~5 minutes.
Fortunately, we're a smaller shop, so I can afford to do this, even though
it may not be an optimal solution for most shops.
