It is possible. Try replacing with an exact same model, as this method will
present the least number of issues for you to contend with. If that is not
possible, the be prepared to have vendor supplied drivers ready to suit the
operating system installed, which sounds like it is Windows 2000. Is that
correct?
Before you do all this though, you may want to swap out patch cords just to
be sure it's not something easier to deal with.

lol NO....i am IT(note the pun), programmer come network engineer deluxe
we contract out for most things, but for small things like this, i do what
i can, i am starting to think there is a movement called cyber mysticism
that adapters and wot not have taken on real lives of their own, and also
have PMS days, one minute they not working next minute they all
smiles...could just be this network (which no i did not set up)
do you think it could be related to the NIC?

I'm sure that he is making an obscure reference to the Open Systems
Interconnect (OSI) model for computer networking. Basically, if nothing has
changed on the client, start tracing it back to the wiring closet and
server.
(P.S. You have placed an ad somewhere for a network engineer, right?)

once again, i am sure TCP/IP was put here just for my misery lol
one of the pc's which was working fine all of suddens wont log on to the
network keeps saying that can't contact the domain controller
i did an ipconfig and the adapter was set to 0.0.0.0
i did a renew and then i get his error
no adapters bound to tcp/ip are enabled for DHCP
any ideas?
i checked in the network settings and it says it is?
