If you reset, you will have to put the permissions back manually. If you
remember them. If you have files and folders with tons of different users
and groups with specific permission sets, this can be very frustrating.

NTFS permissions are stored on disk, not in the registry.

Share permissions are at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares
.
However, the share permissions are not human readable.  It may be more
useful to use Resource Kit utilities such as SrvCheck.exe and
RmtShare.exe.
