Hmmm, Have you looked at GFI's LANguard..? It is a network Security
scanner.. This will do what you want and much more. It provides a listing
of open ports and services running on the clients. The only downfall is
that you must provide a TCP/IP subnet range for it to scan...

If you network is as disastrous as it sounds, then you may not know what IP
ranges are being used. If that is the case maybe a TCP sniffer could shed
some light on what IPs are on the network. I think that MS makes a network
monitor tool that captures this data, but I like to use the TCPdump port for
windows. It does require a raw packet driver and can be a pain, but it is
an administrators 'must have'..

The network scanner is freeware and can be found here
http://www.gfi.com/downloads/downloads.asp?pid=8&vid=1&lid=1

WinPcap raw packet capture library for windows can be found here
http://winpcap.polito.it/install/default.htm

Windump the TCPdump port for windows can be found here
http://windump.polito.it/install/default.htm

note: LANguard produces fancy HTML output to dazzle your boss... ;)

A: No, most of the devices are still 9x. And the problem is that they
aren't all configured to use WINS

A: I would love to be able to make a physical inventory, but he wants
me to be able to find out all the computers that are connected to the
network at a given time, so that we can run that test whenever we want.

Another problem with the physical inventory, is that this is a factory
and I just can't trace all the network cables. I've already have had
some surprises, finding computers in places where I would have never
thought they would be.

I'm here only part of my time, (about 2 days/week) so I don't have the
time to look around for ALL the physical computers.

Any addicional thoughts on this?

Thanks!
