Indefinitely. A secondary is not a caching server, it actually holds a whole copy of the primary zone which it updates periodically.

One is primary and the other secondary. The secondary DNS looks at the primary DNS for any changes and updates itself. Been doing this for years without any problems. If you have a separate zone, you have to update both DNS servers.
