A Static entry in the wins database is the same as an entry into the
lmhosts file. I have no problems with name to IP resolution, its only
when trying to map a drive.

have you tried modifying your lmhosts file (or hosts file, whichever one
doesn't have the .sam extension) on your machine in the
winnt/system32/drivers/etc. folder?
I've spoofed server names before with that method. in the file, you
should see an entry or two (at least localhost) with an IP next to it.
just add one to that.
granted, it means you'd have to modify lmhosts on every machine
accessing it, i believe. dunno. just a thought.
