<slink> Personal firewall issue it was. I hate it when a band of gypsies rides in and installs a personal firewall and forgets to configure it properly. Crap. <\slink>

Maybe access this computer from the network policy got modified? Just thinking out loud. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, September 23, 2002 4:43 PM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: RE: XP networking hosed The name of the workgroup wasn't WORKGROUP, was actually GRESHAM - just seemed easier to talk about it, I suppose, not to mention it's the default. Maybe one should do that for security - call your domain WORKGROUP and your workgroup DOMAIN - there's your security by obscurity... Anyway, got any ideas? I've double-checked all IP settings, the workgroup name, made sure the browser service was running, even slapped NetBEUI on the XP machines, no difference. Sometimes one can ping the server, and the XP WS even shows up in the server's browser - but it can't connect, asks for an authorized logon & password, kinda like when you're connected but not really authenticated to a domain. I have a distinct impression that SP1 broke/added some widget on the XP boxen, maybe security related. Why do people call their workgroups, WORKGROUP? In all my years of IT I have never seen a domain called DOMAIN, why workgroup WORKGROUP? Maybe it is just me. Idea, What if you change the name of the workgroup on 2 computers? Will they see each other then? Or do you get the same error? The error is "The workgroup WORKGROUP is not available..." I'm still researching and testing, but wondering whether anyone might of run into this...
