See http://img.cmpnet.com/nc/1320/graphics/1320f3_file.pdf for details. This offers a very good comparison between both Symantec Ghost and PQ DeployCenter (used to be DriveImage Pro), as well as Altiris Express Deployment Solution, which appears to be by far and away the best imaging solution based on the comparison provided, although it is also the most expensive. We have been using Ghost 7.5 Enterprise Edition, and will probably be moving to Altiris for our imaging needs. All three, I believe, remove the necessity for boot disks, either through using PXE or by creating hidden partitions on the hard drive. Through the separate consoles, you then have the ability to pull up or push down an image from a machine that has the client installed on the hidden partition. In the past, we have not taken advantage of this capability, but we plan to with Altiris.

Have not used Norton Ghost. Based on what I hear, both will do about the same. IMO, I do think Ghost is a little more common in the field - but I have no complaints about PQDI. Also, I think MS says that if you have a varied client hardware profile - use RIS. (1) We setup a client machine (2) Ran setupmgr.exe to create a customized sysprep folder (3) copied this sysprep folder to the base machine (4) ran sysprep.exe - which shutdown the system. From here we made a bunch of CD's of it. We can boot the CD, tell it the machine name and give it a domain admin username/password to add it to the domain and we are good to go. I think you can copy the image to the network - we just wrote CD's. We setup a dummy user profile to capture any profile changes. When it is deployed, (1) we login to the domain as the user (2) log back out (3) login as an admin (4) use ctl panel/system/user profiles to copy the dummy profile over the users profile and we get just about all the profile settings we need. We maintain two hardware profiles so we have two images. HTH, Devin L.
