>>They will sell me a newer model.

Initially, I read this as "They will SEND me a newer model."

But, since the rest of the post did not reflect that, I re-read it.

Did you buy it from them directly or from a VAR? We had a similar
issue occur with the NS100, and a VAR was working with us to get the
204s at a heavy discount, but we abandoned that effort when the scope of
our project increased to include more firewalls (we obtained the 204s in
addition to the 100s)

Netscreen has promised us that they will provide better info about
product lifecycles, as the NS100 was not quite 8 months old when they
first made their announcement, and no mention of the 200 family had
existed at that time.

Sure. They will sell me a newer model. Nice. My unit is one year old
this week. When I bought it, they of course made no effort to let me
know this thing would be gone shortly. The whole thing has just left a
bad taste in my mouth. I have never gone through this with any quality
network appliance before. Like I said before, its not like this thing is
4 years old, or was only a hundred dollars. I made a substantial
purchase.

Not to be making any excuses: NS10, being one of their very first
products, can no longer support all of the features that their latest
version of code requires. With appliances, you have to re-engineer them
every so often and, therefore, you cannot keep them going forever -
especially since they don't support memory or ASIC upgrades (it would
kill their FIPS-Level-2 certification to allow the box to be tampered
with).

In any case, it still remains that you are unhappy and are in a bind.
Have you tried contacting NS support about this? If so, what was their
response? My experience with them has been that they'll either handle it
or get the local sales team involved.

So lets say the model type is 2-3 years old. I still contend that it is
BS that they drop software support for this so quickly. This isn't some
$25 video card. This thing cost at least a couple of grand.

They indicated that the NS10 was going the way of the dodo nearly a year
ago, if I'm not mistaken.

Too bad they won't upgrade you to an NS25, though.

I'm a little pissed at Netscreen right now. I have an NS10 that is about
a year old. NS has recently released the 4.0 version of their software.
Apparently they have decided not to update this model since it has
discontinued it. That really sucks. I have an open software / service
contract with them. It would appear that they are going to choose to
discontinue software updates for discontinued models. Considering they
disco models at the rate of about 1 a month, this could be a real
problem down the road for a lot of folks. Sonicwall promises software
upgrades for free, essentially forever. Even old PIX's can be updated
with a little work. I will think twice before purchasing a NS again.
It's a real shame, it's a killer product. But if you can keep the OS up
to date on a FW, it will eventually become a boat anchor.

I've used a bunch of these. All have their strengths and weakness. 1.
Netscreen 2. Sonicwall 3. Symantec's new VPN Appliance

I really love what netscreen is doing with their systems. Support
structure is still hashing out issues/practices, but these appliances
smoke and are easy to set up/integrate.

Hit me off-line if you want more info.

Good luck

How about a simpler or cheaper firewall/vpn solution. I don't have a
lot of users.

Go for it. It works great. I use it all the time to work on my systems
remotely on the weekends.

What do you guys think of it? I'm interested in setting up VPN so my
users can access our network from home.

Hi all,
Does anyone know if PIX supports VPN?

Johnny
