They're purpose built NAS OS's, based on Win2k. They support all the typical
NAS stuff - CIFS, HTTP and NFS access, etc - but they use the Win2k
permissions model, and can run certain Win2k apps (like AV and your favorite
NT backup agents) locally.

The non-Win2k vendors use a combination of Linux and Samba, and the problem
is that the Unix file permissions structure is a bit more limiting, IMO,
than the Microsoft one. So you can't be as flexible with it.
