Its not all that easy, is it? A few things.

First - your backup server can be dual homed as well, but needs to have a
way to do all name resolution so it and only it finds the servers on the
back network. Probably the easiest way is to just connect via IP address.

Second - a hub is going to be slower than a switch. In fact, a 10mb switch
is faster in general than a 100mb hub.

Third - is your backup window short enough (in other words do you need 24x7
availability for your systems) to justify not using the production LAN?
