Adrian, I had the same problem. Check the following registry Key:
HKLM\software\Microsoft\MSSQLSERVER\client\connectTo\DSQUERY. I changed the value of this key to DBNETLIB. I was then able to install the service pack. While I have no idea if this is your problem, it worked with me. If not, I recommend a call to Microsoft.
