Adrian,

I had the same problem. Check the following registry Key:

HKLM\software\Microsoft\MSSQLSERVER\client\connectTo\DSQUERY. I changed
the value of this key to DBNETLIB. I was then able to install the
service pack. While I have no idea if this is your problem, it worked
with me. If not, I recommend a call to Microsoft.

Dennis

Subject: SQL SP3 user validation failure

Hell everyone,

I am trying to apply SQL Server 2000 SP3 (the security patch is already
installed), but it refuses to proceed with:

"Setup was unable to validate logged on user".

I am logged on as Administrator so that should not be a problem. I also
tried using the "sa" account with its valid password and that fails with
the same error message.

I have never seen this problem before, and previously SP2 installed
fine.

Does anyone have any ideas what the authentication problem is please?

Thanks!

Adrian Cooper.
