Adam,
First just because you are having a problem with 8.5 doesn't mean
jump to 8.6, as you may still have the same issue. I am using 8.5 on my 5
servers and have run across this same exact issue in the past. On one
machine I had to pull down drivers specifically from the manufacturer, and
on another it was simply not set to Overwrite, but append. Then on yet
another I was trying to backup more then 40GB, at which point it was backing
up just popped out the tape asking for another to write the other 8GB. I
personally haven't ever had any major issues with 8.5, that weren't resolved
by a Veritas fix.

Two things. First, grab the 8.6 upgrade for Backup Exec.
Second, it sounds like a media overwrite protection setting. When you
inventory the tape, does it show that it is available for writing? (usually
will appear blue in the media lists)? I'd bet it isnt'.
