I've just download the java app onto one of my desktops running XP and it has locked it up twice. I'm going to assume I downloaded the wrong app as it placed a java web start icon on my desktop. Clicking on this icon I'm presented with the Application Manager which displays the 4 apps that come standard with this. If I click on either of these apps my system immediately locks up. Or maybe it's just taking an unusually long time to open this app. Either way this doesn't do me any good as I'm still prompted with a message stating that I need to download the latest java update from Microsoft when I attempt to visit a site that has java enabled on it somewhere. I would think that this would be a simple transparent update that would not litter my desktop with unneeded icons or alter system performance. Can someone confirm if there is a particular version that's to be downloaded onto XP systems?

It's simple enough to download Java from Sun. http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html We're developing a huge Java app here and are currently an IE5.5 shop and have no problems with MS not including it with IE. Wouldn't this make it hard for anyone that uses XP and IE6 to browse sites that have Java installed? Or if there are customers converting to XP that have applications that utilize java? Guess I'll be going back to NT 2000 Professional. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pombo, Tony J Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 10:47 AM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: RE: What's the deal with XP or IE6 and Java? I've noticed this as I'm unable locate this anywhere. I have SP1 installed on my xp boxes but I'm thinking this doesn't include the VM, so what's the deal with this? Anyone know if MS plans on releasing any updates anytime in the near future, or is it something we just have to WAIT on? FYI: Microsoft pulled Java VM out of Windows XP Service Pack 1a. They also removed the separate downloads from their website. -----Original Message----- From: Adam Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2003 5:02 PM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: Re: What's the deal with XP or IE6 and Java? Anyone here You may not have the Microsoft Virtual Machine component installed. It ships with Windows XP Service Pack 1.
