If the old drivers cannot support the new firmware your system may not be able to 
boot. If the old drivers can't control the SCSI card enough to access the file system 
you won't be able to get the new drivers installed.

  The config should live through a firmware update.

  The general rule is, drivers first, then firmware.  Check the release 
notes first for any exceptions.

  As always: Have multiple, verified, tested backups, and update your
Emergency Repair Disk, before doing anything.
