I'd blame the switch... If you force the machines at full or half and leave the switch at auto, the switch still has to make a determination and it is not always the correct determination.
Can you set your switch ports to full as well? A user has been complaining about slow LAN access ever since getting a new Dell GX260 desktop. Copying a 14MB file to the desktop took 20 seconds. Going to another PC (GX240) it takes about 2 seconds. Installing the latest drivers on the 260 didn't fix the problem, but changing it from full duplex to half duplex did. Any ideas why this fix worked? I double checked the GX240 and it's set to full duplex. Could the switch be the problem? Why would some PC's "prefer" half duplex over full? Could it be the cheap switch?
