It's "possible" that the switch didn't reset itself. Although, it should be
able to auto-negotiate. However, it "is" a Linksys and I'd be reluctant to
buy one for home use....

As for what point I would recommend a managed switch, it's a tough call.
With limited budgets, pros and cons must be addressed. But you as the
consultant need to be able to back it up and provide details as to why they
need certain features. I myself, get managed switches anytime I can. It
saves a lot of heartache in most cases....

FWIW Server and desktops are all W2KSP3.

Nonmanageable switch (see link). What if I set everything to full duplex and
then restarted the switch? Might that let it figure it out correctly? I
can't say for sure the machine that the 260 replaced was set to full duplex,
so maybe that port set itself to half duplex and didn't adjust when I put in
the new PC?

They bought this switch (at my recommendation) recently to replace a hub
they had been using. At what point do you recommend managed switches? Any
time the budget allows?

Subject: RE: Full & Half Duplex

I'd blame the switch... If you force the machines at full or half and leave
the switch at auto, the switch still has to make a determination and it is
not always the correct determination.

Can you set your switch ports to full as well? Or is this not a manageable
switch?

The scenario:

100Mbit copper Ethernet.
Single Dell PowerEgde 4400 w/ integrated Intel NIC.
Linksys EF4124 10/100 full duplex, auto MDI/MDI-X switch.
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=35&scid=39&prid=473

The latest desktops [1] are Dell GX240's/260's with integrated 100Mbit NIC's
and I manually set them to 100Mbit full duplex (same as the server).

A user has been complaining about slow LAN access ever since getting a new
Dell GX260 desktop. Copying a 14MB file to the desktop took 20 seconds.
Going to another PC (GX240) it takes about 2 seconds. Installing the latest
drivers on the 260 didn't fix the problem, but changing it from full duplex
to half duplex did.

Any ideas why this fix worked? I double checked the GX240 and it's set to
full duplex. Could the switch be the problem? Why would some PC's "prefer"
half duplex over full? Could it be the cheap switch?
