Meaning that Microsoft would like to see you purchasing a TS CAL for each of
your PC's, right?

Effective 5/1/03, MS no longer bundles terminal server license with XP and
W2K. If implemented for w2k before 5/1/3 ok, but W2k3 requires a license for
all os (at least on paper). I just upgraded a nt terminal server to w2k3 and
got a licensing lecture from ms.

I concur with Paul. XP and Win2k do not require a license but if you connect
via any other means (Win98, Thinclient etc...) A license is required.

I believe you are incorrect on your licensing. It is not concurrent. We
have it here and if a machine logs on, one of those licenses is assigned to
that machine. If there are no licenses available, a machine is granted a
temporary license; which I believe is good for 30 days. You are correct,
though, in that W2K and XP Pro have builtin licenses. This changes with
Windows 2003, though. Those W2K and XP clients that already have licenses
will be "grandfathered" in, but any new ones will require a purchased
license. For more information on TS licensing and TS in general, you may
wish to post to the TS newsgroup, microsoft.public.windows.terminal_services
at news.microsoft.com. It's an excellent resource for term serv.

One more thing... Apparently, Win2k pro and XP pro clients can connect to
terminal services without having to have a terminal services CAL, they just
need to have actual Win2K server CALs in place.

Sorry to bother the list with this, but I really just need confirmation of
this info.

Thanks,

Matt

HI,

I'm trying to get a grasp on TS CAL licensing with Win2K server. I've done
some research on this, and from what I can tell:

1. If you buy, say, 15 licenses, then you can have 15 concurrent
connections to your server.

2. Those 15 licenses are available to any client so long as the license is
not being currently used by another client.

3. You do not have to purchase a CAL for every client that could
potentially connect.

4. MS's licensing server handles the requests for the CALs.

Does all of this sound correct? If there's anything more that I really
ought to know that anyone can pass on, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt
