Windows Update showed I was behind on about a dozen or so, so I selected
them all, and everyone of them failed.

My next step is to try re-installing the Service Pack, as you suggest - have
to wait until early tomorrow when the users are off

Can you install other security updates or is this the only one giving you
problems? I suggest you try installing SP6a.

Subject: Cannot install RPC Buffer Overrun Hotfix on Windws NT4 Domain
Co ntroller

Hello group

After the flurry of announcements and warnings on MS03-026 about the RPC
vulnerability, we patched all of our servers, both Windows 2000 and Windows
NT 4, a total of about 50

One lousy server will not accept the hotfix !!

The install starts okay, then I get:
"Setup Error - The Operation completed successully"
I press OK, then I get:
"Setup Error - Windows NT 4.0 Hotfix installation did not complete"

Has anybody seen this error before ?

The Event Viewer shows a Warning in the Application Log as: source:
WindowsUpdateV3; Category: None; Event ID: 16389; text as follows:
"The description for Event ID ( 16389 ) in Source ( WindowsUpdateV3 ) cannot
be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information
or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
V3_2|6133|INSTALL|Security Update Windows NT4 (823980)|1,10,101,0|2003-08-07
07:45:10|1|FAIL|0x80004005|Unspecified error|."

I don't know what the "/AUXSOURCE= flag " is, nor do I know what the
"Unspecified error" is.

I've searched Technet for 16389 and 0x80004005 but found nothing relevant

I checked http://www.eventid.net for 16389 and found some info, but nothing
that solved the problem

This box does not run IIS or SQL (the products most often mentioned in the
sources noted above), but it is an NT 4.0 BDC.

The light at the end of the tunnel is about to go out !!

Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated

Cheers
