Yeah, this was a thread on the XeTeX list. Apparently it's an Apple-
created ligature. I think it shows up with o-slash as well. Hoefler text,
right?

workaround 1) use a different font. :P
workaround 2) insert something that would interrupt the ligature being
formed, like centripital\hbox{}/centrifugal

potential solution 3) use the much more ConTeXt-like code: centripetal|/
|centrifugal.
