Hi Hans,
many thanks for your work (Hans, Mikael and Wolfgang) in the upcoming
upload.
I’d be interested in having parallel notes (endnotes would be fine for
me, since footnotes would probably impossible to get).
My sample works as long as `spread` isn’t an option in
`\flushsubcolumnsets` (but notes aren’t synched):
\definecolumnset
[parallel]
[n=1,
align={lesswidows,lessclubs,lessbroken,lessorphans}]
\definesubcolumnset[parallel][L][1]
\definesubcolumnset[parallel][R][2]
\startsetups balance:example
\balancetopskip \strutht
\balancebottomskip \strutdp
\stopsetups
\definenote[leftnote][location=text]
\setupnotation[leftnote]
[before={\startsubcolumnset[L]}, after={\stopsubcolumnset}]
\definenote[rightnote][location=text]
\setupnotation[rightnote]
[before={\startsubcolumnset[R]},
after={\stopsubcolumnset\flushsubcolumnsets[spread]}]
\starttext
\dorecurse{25}{a\leftnote{\samplefile{knuth}}
b\rightnote{\samplefile{zapf}}\\}
\page[even]\startcolumnset[parallel]
\placenotes[leftnote]
\placenotes[rightnote]
\stopcolumnset
\stoptext
I’m probably missing something. Is there any chance to getit right?

But critical apparatus also use many paragraph notes (it would be
considered insane from the perspective of more standard texts, but there
is no other way to achieve that with variants and sources [when no more
apparatus are needed]).
I would even like to have footnote registers as page glossaries (as
already mentioned in
https://mailman.ntg.nl/archives/list/[email protected]/thread/SFCSFNET675R3NS7S3SJYB42MTYTK5PL/#PTM7CXZVGU7JXAAVVXHUQ5HEMWWXKWRB).

Well, for `\setupnote[footnote][location=text]`, `before` is my way to
add commands (such as `\directsetup`]).
Would also `before` be removed from `\setupnotations`?

Looking forward to reading that chapter.
Many thanks for your help,
Pablo
