It's a system variable.
Under Linux you can set it up in your /home/YOUR_NICKNAME/.bashrc file, adding :
export OSFONTDIR=THE_PATH_TO_YOUR_FONT_DIR
At the end of the file.
There's certainly the same under Mac.
