Most settings between

  \start
  \stop

are local, so you can simply do

\placefigure[none]{}{
  \startfloatcombination[2*1]
    \setupcaptions[width=fit]
    \placefigure[here]{}{\externalfigure[01]}
    \placefigure[here]{}{\externalfigure[02]}
  \stopfloatcombination
}
