Mea culpa, Mea maxima culpa...
I'm guilty of the sin of believing all compilers are gnu compilers...
The use-syslog fix didn't compile on Luca's Sun Solaris box.
Anyway, Luca partly fixed it - just chainsawed the offending block out.
This fix makes it default properly with a little message. If I can
figure out how to do the same thing under Solaris, I'll reinstate it.
Otherwise, I'll make this gnu specific...
