I had previously been using the NTop supplied with OPENXTRA
Commander for Win32 and it was fine but it failed to install
on my new machine so I bought the official Win32 version. This
seems to have a problem that makes it virtually useless for
tracking the activities of local users: With up to 15 local
hosts consisting of two routers, various network devices, two
servers and up to 8 student laptops some which are using P2P
there are LOTS of hosts in the "All hosts" list so I need to
filter on local addresses. However, this newer version of NTop
(4.0.1) does not correctly filter the local hosts. Only a
small subset of them are listed.
For example:
00:26:44:49:6F:BC
billion electric co., ltd.:24:a4:7f
C8:0A:A9:98:D5:A7
shuttle, inc.:bf:eb:d9
shuttle, inc.:48:55:bd
78:E4:00:C0:43:2E
These are only the routers and servers. None of the laptops
are listed although they can be found if I use the "All"
filter. All the machines on the network have 192.168.1.x
addresses as do those listed above.
So the problem is:
* ntop isn't showing the ip address as it used to in the
older version (the old version sometimes showed the
computer name, sometimes the ip address and sometimes
0.0.0.0 although following the link showed data for the
correct ip address). Ntop 4.0.1 only ever shows the
MAC address for the hosts it lists as "local", whilst it
regards all other hosts as being "remote" even though
they have addresses in the 192.168.1.0 network.
* When you follow the link to the info for one of the
local computers you find despite it having an address
like 192.168.1.121 its listed as "remote".
* Showing the MAC address is not very helpful. The best
thing to show is the ip address (even computer names
can be unhelpful).
Should I file a bug report, or is there are way to get ntop
to filter correctly?
