Replying to my own email - tried next the kali-rolling option, with the
same results:

... starting with:

$ wget http://apt-stable.ntop.org/stretch/all/apt-ntop-stable.deb
$ dpkg -i apt-ntop-stable.deb

... all the way to ...

$ apt-get update
