im not running from the development tree, im running from what i presume to be the 
stable build that was posted to sourceforge, version 2.1.3 specifically.

from the ntop man page (version 2.1.3):

mySQL options: 

[-b|--sql-host <host:port>] [-v|--mysql-host <username:password:dbName>]

its both, at least in version 2.1.3 according to the man pages.
