I'm a bit limited on available systems, so in the past my BB (bb4.org)
has also been my backup (BakBone's NetVault) server. I've never had an
issue and its worked great as I have three networks and this one system
has an interface on each network. More recently, it is also now running
NTOP. I've read the FAQ and read over the requirements. CPU cycles and
RAM are not a problem for this system. However, in reading through the
FAQ I came across a few instances of "packet discarding". I'm fairly
confident that my backup software has some checksums in place to make
sure that data sent over the wire actually makes it tape. I'm curious,
though, if any NTOP users have seen or would expect to see any issues
caused by running a network-based backup software and NTOP on the same
system? If NTOP is forced to discard packets and/or processing of them
due to high network caused by the backups, I can live with this.
However, I wouldn't want to see NTOP cause a problem and/or discard a
packet this causing my backup software not to see it.
Any thoughts?
