Nope. We do it all the time. If you have customized any of
the data files installed by make (e.g. ettercap), you'll want to copy them back
into the build directory before make install. But the .rrd files are in
separate directories - and make install knows nothing of them, so they won't get
touched.
Of course, it's ALWAYS a good idea to back up your system
before ANY change, but you are already doing that, right?

Subject: RE: [Ntop] Upgrade or reinstall
The OS
in question is FC4.
I
believe you've answered my question, but just to be sure; is there any risk to
upgrading by simply overlaying the new Ntop build over the old one versus
performing a 'make uninstall' of the original Ntop build
first.
My
goal is to preserve as much as possible from the original install.
I just don't want to compromise the new Ntop install while I'm at
it.

Subject: RE: [Ntop] Upgrade or reinstallUm...What OS? In the *nix world, we usually just run make install and overlay the executables.Regardless, the .rrd data files shouldn't be affected.-----Burton

Subject: [Ntop] Upgrade or reinstallMy Ntop server can't go much more than a month or so before I see mutex errors in the Netflow statistics and the collector stops functioning. It has just happened again and this time I plan to upgrade from the v3.2 build that I downloaded from the web to the latest CVS build in the hope that it will increase robustness. Is there a way to perform an upgrade of Ntop (using source code) or am I better off to do a clean uninstall/reinstall. Assuming the later is there a way to preserve the RRD stored data for use one the upgrade is completed? Thanks
