Right... Luca ripped that option out in the 3.2 development cycle. So ntop
surely won't work with FreeBSD below 4.11. However, the FreeBSD fix should
be in versions 5.4 or later.

Here is one of many messages on the problem
http://listgateway.unipi.it/pipermail/ntop/2005-May/010391.html. If you
want the tech details, the key thread is

Btw, it would be a dash (-) not an underscore (_) in the -- option.

Will do, this afternoon.
In the mean time:

Tried both versions of pcap with this:
--pcap_setnonblock

Got this in log:
Jun 11 07:07:19 grace-gkrs ntop[36716]: NOTE: Interface merge disabled
due to
command line switch

This on cmdline:
/usr/local/bin/ntop: unrecognized option `--pcap_setnonblock'
FATAL ERROR: unknown ntop option, '?'
Welcome to ntop v.3.2 SourceForge .tgz

Also, during compile, got this. (both pcaps)

configure: WARNING: sys/sched.h: present but cannot be compiled
configure: WARNING: sys/sched.h: check for missing prerequisite
headers?
configure: WARNING: sys/sched.h: see the Autoconf documentation
configure: WARNING: sys/sched.h: section "Present But Cannot Be
Compiled"
configure: WARNING: sys/sched.h: proceeding with the preprocessor's result
configure: WARNING: sys/sched.h: in the future, the compiler will take
precedence
configure: WARNING: ## ------------------------------- ##
configure: WARNING: ## Report this to the ntop lists. ##
configure: WARNING: ## ------------------------------- ##

Saw this, installed gawk, didn't change anything I could see:
Install gawk

FBSD ports has several patches, removed all of them, one a a time,
recompiled, didn't help.
Will also try sourgeforge tarball without any freebsdism.s and see.

Got this also, don't know if the 'overcount' issue on statistics page cause
problems.

Jun 11 07:15:57 grace-gkrs ntop[40848]: **ERROR** mVLAN: Host
(identical IP/MAC) found on multiple VLANs
Jun 11 07:15:57 grace-gkrs ntop[40848]: mVLAN: ntop continues but will
consolidate and thus probably overcount this traffic
