There are a few issues we need to resolve. The biggest is how NTPv4 is
going to
co-exist with the current xntpd in Solaris. Some of the programs in the
version 3
distro already in Solaris have been modified by Sun over the years and
it would be
difficult to add the functions to the version 4 code and we couldn't
just drop the
current functionality for backwards compatibility reasons. The most obvious
example is the the addition of a mutlicast client mode in ntpdate.

Also, now that we are going to offer multiple methods of keeping a
systems clock
in sync, it would be nice to have a single SMF service and choose what
method
to use on the fly, either automatically or by setting SMF service
properties.

Another thing, in the next day or so, the new configuration code will be
going
into the ntp-dev branch, which will make the config file format
radically different
and not compatible. So, do we use /etc/inet/ntp.conf for both or use
different config
files entirely.

So, lets see if we can get a discussion going on these issues. Also, we
need to produce
man pages for all of the public deliverables, such as ntpd, ntptrace,
ntpdc, ntpq, etc.
I thought it might be interesting to try to do some of this
collaboratively via Google
docs. It doesn't appear that you can share a file generally to anybody,
so if anybody wants
to help out with that effort, please just send me your email address and
I will add you to
any of the documents created there.

Thanks.
