Winter Sports Wrap-Up (compiled by Nancy Rough, NT Athletics Coordinator)
NT Winter Athletics 2018

It was a winter that lasted forever but thankfully we had many sports to keep
us busy in the gyms, pool, rinks and out on the slopes. During the winter
season there were more than 300 students participating on teams, intramurals,
athletic clubs and training in our weight room.

Congratulations to all teams for their successful seasons and thank you to all
coaches for donating their time and effort to their athletes.

Girls Volleyball
Both Junior and Senior teams played in 2 tournaments which gave everyone more
experience and confidence to play to their potential in the regular season
games and playoffs. For Seniors with the bulk of the team being in grade 11,
the core of the team will be returning next year. We played to a 5-3 record and
lost in the semi-finals to a strong Northern team after defeating Humberside in
the quarter finals. The Junior team came together with a group of eager grade 9
players and veteran grade 10 girls to form a strong bond with many fun
experiences and earning a 3rd spot in a competitive pool of teams.

Swimming
Senior Boys won the TDSSAA Regional Championship. 17 swimmers went to OFSAA in
Windsor - largest number in years representing all categories
(Jr/Sr/girls/boys). It was a fantastic season, dedicated group - with no access
to a community centre, students braved the early mornings at Glenview PS and
Lawrence Park and the afternoons at Northern.

Curling
There were many keen beginners that came out to try curling for the first time
and in total 47 students formed teams and competed against each other and other
schools. NT won a bronze in both the A and C flight.

Snowboarding Race Results
In the City Championships, NT has fantastic results: 5th place (Open Boys
Division), 3rd (Open Division Girls) and 3rd (High School Division Girls). Nine
athletes qualified for OFSAA. NT placed Top 10 individual girl (7th of 115) and
Top 10 team (6th of 22) and the High School Division Girls were 5th.

Alpine Skiing Race Results
Open Division (Level 2) at Championships: Boys City Champions; Individual
Races 1st place GS; 1st Sl, 2nd GS; 4th GS, 5th Sl; 4th Sl.
Open Division (Level 2) Girls at City Championships - individual races 6th
place Sl
OFSAA - 2nd in Slalom; 2nd in GS - individual Races- 9th Sl, 5th GS; 7th GS.

Hockey
The Varsity Boys Hockey team were knocked out in the Tier 1 Contact quarter
finals to eventual silver medalist Sir Oliver Mowat Mustangs. The players
competed hard all season and the team highlight was participating in the St.
Peter Saints Classic in Peterborough, the largest high school hockey tournament
in the province.

The Varsity Girls Hockey team played hard without many breaks as injuries left
the team with a small number of girls on the bench to shift . The girls lost in
the semi-final game to the team that went on to compete in OFSAA. Thank you to
all the girls and especially the grade 12 veterans who were dedicated to this
team for the past 4 years.

Badminton
At Regionals the teamed won a Silver in the Boys, Mixed and Combined. Seven
athletes competed in Cities resulting in a 3rd and 5th place finish.

Basketball
The Junior boys basketball team had a very successful season this year. After
winning the tier II league last season, the boys played tier I for the first
time in well over a decade. The team was not overwhelmed, nor outmatched and
finished the regular season in second place with a 7-1 record. The boys kept up
their high level of play and made it to their third finals in four seasons.
Unfortunately, they came up short in the Championship game against a very
strong Oakwood squad, however coach Tallevi could not have been more proud of
their efforts!

The Senior boys basketball team had a rebuilding year with a very young team
made up of mostly grade elevens. They fought hard for coach Tracey and coach
Hood all year long, and were very competitive every time they stepped on the
floor. With many returning players next year, and a strong crop of grade tens
coming up, the senior boys will certainly be hungry and ready to make a run
next season.

Now that spring has finally arrived, we can finally get outdoors without
wearing our toques and gloves! Come out and cheer on our rugby, ultimate,
archery, table tennis, soccer, track, beach volleyball, softball and baseball
teams.

Schedules are posted on the TDSB Sports Page.
