While this concept is new to Dell and apparently to the guy at the Register, Intel Modular Server has been out for 5 years. For some reason it never really took off and so Intel discontinued it. Maybe they knew this was coming.
Something like this is great if you know you are starting out with 2 or 3 servers and will need more later. Selling it as just a single server was a hard sale. Maybe Dell will have better luck.
