One thing I always liked about Netware/NDS - you could assign ACLs in NDS, because all the volumes were in the directory. I found it a lot easier to manage that way, rather than out in the filesystem of the server. That, and the "role" assignment. Assign access rights to the role, and then add the role to a person. Should the person leave, just assign the role to the replacement user. No need to re-create all the rights. (yes, you can do similar by using groups).
