Subject: [NTSysADM] Max size of "Notes" field in AD?

Does anyone know what the limit to the size of the "Notes" field in AD? I can't
seem to search up a limit.

Here's why I ask - we've (the IT dept) have been told that we need to keep
track of changes to user accounts (added to groups, removed, etc). We said we
need an auditing utility to properly do that. It was suggested that we could
use the "Notes" field in AD to do that - add an entry for every user change.
Mind you, we mostly already do that, or try to; it is a easy, cheap sort of
audit log.

Now, you know, I know, even my boss knows, that this is not the ideal way to do
this. But he needs some specifics as to why we'd rather not do this. I can see
that, for a long term employee, there's going to be a whole lot of information
in that field over the years - if a user belongs to a dozen groups, and moves
from site to site so their home profile changes, etc. Not to mention, making
reports out of this would be a pain. I could probably cobble something together
using Powershell, to extract out info.

Anyways - is there a limit to the size of this field? If so, what is it?

(I hope to come back and ask for advice about audit tracking ... but for right
now, the boss says he needs to know this limit, so I'm asking ...)
