If it helps anyone, this is a bit of script I made and use to delete all but
the most-recent shadow copy on a system:

  1. VSSADMIN List Shadows|FIND /I "Shadow Copy ID">%TEMP%\SHADOW_LIST.txt
  2. FOR /F "tokens=2 delims={}" %%I IN (%TEMP%\SHADOW_LIST.txt) DO SET
LAST_SHADOW=%%I
  3. FOR /F "tokens=2 delims={}" %%I IN (%TEMP%\SHADOW_LIST.txt) DO IF "%%I"
NEQ "%LAST_SHADOW%" VSSADMIN Delete Shadows /Shadow={%%I} /Quiet

Is it possible you really do need more space for the shadow copies? If so, is
there enough room on the drive for more?

Vssadmin list shadowstorage
Vssadmin resize shadowstorage

On a Windows 7 machine I have next to me, only one shadow was listed, but "list
shadowstorage" showed almost all of the space taken.

Check the switches for the "resize" command and see what might be appropriate
for your drive and amount of free space.

Subject: [NTSysADM] delete vss shadow copy in XP?

I have a XP SP3 machine that is virtualized and needs to be backed up. When
veeam runs to backup, it throws an error about the maximum number of vss
snapshots have been reached.

When I do a vssadmin list shadows, it only shows one entry. When I try a
vssadmin delete command, it gives me the error of incorrect usage. After doing
research, I cannot find anything on how to delete that shadow copy in XP. Does
anyone have any experience with this?

TIA

Jimmy
