My suspicion is they still had the testing infrastructure and team still in 
place so it was easy enough and close enough to EOL date to toss in.  MY guess 
is that going forward the testing infrastructure for XP will be dismantled and 
team will be dispersing so that MS will save massive amounts of time with the 
reduced testing load.

No, they are not setting a precedence, nor should they.

This issue is both big enough in scope, and near enough to the EOL data, that 
they can do this now.



Not advisable going forward.  People (especially organizations) have had enough 
time to deal with a very public, and oft announced EOL schedule.
