So what WAS that Chuck Miller doing, anyway??

But the problem with this situation *USED* to be that Macs didn't implement AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) over TCP/IP, only over Local/EtherTalk. So even though you were running IP on the Mac, it was only good for FTP, HTTP, PING, etc..., not any of the LAN services like AppleShare, Print Sharing, etc... In order to accommodate this, NT was built with the SFM talking directly to the internal TDI, that's why it doesn't show up in the bindings list. For instance, in looking at bindings for my Ethernet card I see Server-->TCP/IP-->NetCard. However, there is no listing for SFM, thus it is NOT bound to the TCP/IP stack, and thus wouldn't be able to service AFP requests even if they did arrive over TCP/IP! So, in order for this to be resolved, two things will have to happen: 1) Apple rewrite the net stuff to allow AFP over TCP/IP. (Maybe this is already done w/ Open Transport??) 2) MS will have to rewrite the Services for Mac to allow them to bind to TCP/IP. (This does *NOT* appear to be done in NT4.0sp1) Now, however, I'd like to know how Chuck Miller is accessing his Notes database w/ Macs using IP only. Are you using a web browser?? Is it possible you're running EtherTalk AND TCP/IP and not realizing it? Am I dense enuff to be missing something REALLY big here?? (Getting rid of AppleTalk on a LAN, and even better yet, getting Mac IP services over a WAN would be GREAT!!) Thanks in advance for taking time to answer... <----====<>====----> Steven M.
