Timely topic as I was just looking in to this also and was about to ask the same question.
>From I gather, Storage Spaces is based on the old drive extender technology from Windows Home Server but vastly improved. It is software RAID. It is normally not as fast as hardware RAID. But for home use that may not be that big of a deal. What were you thinking of running Storage Spaces on? I am looking at using it on our installs of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. Your thinking of a simple box, some drives and free NAS software would probably be less expensive depending on what you had or needed to buy.. Any opinions about this? I was looking at it as an option for storing backups and maybe for media and backup server at home. A simple box with some NAS drives would be more economical than dedicated RAID hardware. Thanks. Bill
