And don’t forget the user groups. PASS for SQL Server, etc.

I did Oracle for a lot of years in a past incarnation, and I’ve come to the
conclusion that 5-7K attendees at anything is just about max. I went to
OpenWorld once, just to see what it was like, and there were just too many
people, and too much marketing. Beyond about 5K people it gets too big and
unwieldy. Unless you’re looking to buy products. Vendors love the
mega-conferences, and you’ll find all of them at bigger events.

But user conferences like PASS events (PASS Summit, SQL Saturdays, SharePoint
Saturdays) and 3rd party tech conferences like Connections and TechMentor (I’ve
gone to several, highly recommend) are great for technical content.

Are you referring to IT/Dev Connections?

Connections is a good event. I spoke at it for many years and may start doing
so again next year. Good technical information at a variety of levels.

That doesn’t mean we don’t get bombed though. ☺

Reminds me of HP. They started out with the HP Technology Forum, which was an
excellent place to meet and talk with engineers, get training, and actually
learn something. This mutated into HP Discover, which is an IT Executive
schmooz-fest consisting of sales sessions on how you can replace your IT staff
with HP services and move all your data into the cloud. Held twice a year, one
in Vegas the other in Barcelona, tells you immediately how big the party is.

I’ve been looking for a good replacement for it ever since. Hearing some of
you talk about Tech-Ed I was optimistic but now it seems it going the same
direction.

Anyone have any suggestions for a technical-based forum for people who want to
learn about the technology rather than go to Paul McCartney concerts and drink
free booze? (Yeah, I know. Call me silly but for some reason I’d prefer to
get educated rather than bombed. I guess I’m making up for my college days).

It’s been yelled about, cursed, discussed, and hammered to death in various
private forums, before it was ever announced publicly.

The MVPs (Lync, Exchange, SharePoint, Office, I can’t speak for any of the
rest) hate it.

Rod can tell us for certain, but I’m pretty sure the System Center folks hate
it too (they had MMS).

I'm kind of surprised this topic has laid here quietly this long. I've never
been able to go to any of the (now cancelled) conferences for one reason or the
other, but I always had the impression they were considered a rather big deal
by IT folk that attended.
