So, I have a Win 8.1 Recovery medium -- a USB flash drive -- that is bootable with the laptop in UEFI boot mode. Booted from that. Tried "Startup repair", and it thought for about 20 seconds and said it could not repair the system. It also said "Log file: " (yes, nothing). Not sure what to make of that. Opened a command prompt from the Advanced Advanced [sic] menu. I can see the actual Windows partition, which has drive letter E:. C: got assigned to the (empty) reserved partition. Used DISKPART to assign C: to the Windows install. Tried "BOOTREC /ScanOS" and it found "C:\Windows". Tried "BOOTREC /RebuildBCD", answered "Y" to "Add installation to boot list", and it reported "The requested system device cannot be found". Not sure what to make of that, either. Tried "BCDBOOT C:\Windows /s C: /v /f UEFI" and it reported "Boot files successfully created". Exited the command prompt window, shut down, removed flash drive, powered on. Windows still won't boot in UEFI mode. Put flash drive back in. Now flash drive won't boot, either. "The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors", code 0xC000000F. I think the repair tools just ended up scrambling the recovery media. Reminds me of the time the Slackware installer tried to install the Linux boot loader on to the installation CD-ROM. -- Ben
