Do you know the sensitivity of the data being sent? Also are you doing any ssl inspection like stripping the ssl inspecting the packets and then re applying the ssl and send on to the destination? Something like f5 and other Web load balancers do.
I agree with the VPN comment also i have seen the later with dedicated nat also. Just make sure the ssl session is using tls 1.2 not sslv2 or sslv2 due to the deprecation of these protocols and the various issues already disclosed.
