"cp" or "scp"? If "scp", then you might increase performance a bit by selecting a different cipher, such as blowfish, using the "-c" option, and/or enabling compression with the "-C" option. But I'd guess that the real problem is the size of the SSH receive window on the destination host, and I think the only fix is to update the ssh software.
