I've got a DS414 and a DS214. The DS414 has four 4TB WD Red 5400 drives (
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EHBERSE/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item) and
the DS214 has two 6TB WD Red drives (
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LO3KR96/ref=pe_385040_30332190_TE_3p_dp_1),
the same model you are considering.

The DS414 is set up in RAID 10 and the DS214 in RAID 1. Reviews I read
said SHR was a tad slower than other comparable RAID formats, but I was
going RAID 10 regardless so I didn't spend much time considering it.

Both have been great so far and the 4-drive unit certainly has sufficient
speed for my purposes and connection (which is primarily for storage of
backups over gig ethernet). The 2-drive unit is not in a speed critical
application. I've not had any drive failures, so I don't have any
experience to report dealing with that on these devices.

I'm assuming you've already checked the Synology page regarding drive
compatibility for the model you are considering. Looks like both are on
there:
https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility/hd/DS1815+

Don't know your needs, but I'd assume an 8-drive OBR10 would be plenty
fast to not be the choke point, even with 54k drives -- probably even with
6 drives and spares.

Sent by: [email protected]

Hi all,

I'm looking to drop one of these in at customer site,
https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS1815+
I'm curious to know if anyone has elected to use their proprietary raid
SHR/SHR2, and if so how it stacks up to traditional raid in terms of
performance.

And on a separate note , has anyone jumped onto the WD RED "NAS" drives
yet?

I like the idea of 6TB for 270.00, but not crazy about 54k speed or 3 yr
warranty

however , 226.00 for a 4TB 72k with a 5 year warranty does sit a little
better

any feedback is appreciated
